Should the occasion arise when you find yourself devoid of kibble and must resort to preparing something straight from the refrigerator or pantry, there exists an abundance of healthy choices available for your canine companion. Here, we present a few of the most prevalent benefits associated with the production of homemade dog food.

Having control over the ingredients is one of the main advantages of preparing your own dog food. By doing so, you are able to have full authority over what goes into the food. This enables you to restrict the inclusion of artificial additives, preservatives, and fillers that are commonly found in commercial dog food.

Another benefit is the ability to customize the food according to your dog’s individual requirements. Whether your furry friend has allergies, sensitivities, or dietary restrictions, you can cater the food to meet their specific needs. This is often a challenging task with commercial dog food, as it is generally formulated to suit a broad range of dogs.

In addition, homemade dog food is prepared using fresh ingredients, which not only enhances its taste but also boosts its nutritional value. Fresh ingredients contain essential vitamins and minerals at a higher level, contributing to your dog’s overall health and well-being.

Although the initial investment for equipment and ingredients may be higher, preparing dog food at home can be a more cost-effective choice in the long term. This is particularly true for dog owners who have multiple dogs or dogs with special dietary requirements.

Portions will vary depending on the size and age of your dog!

1. Chicken
Many dogs have a preference for chicken over other poultry. Hunting breeds specifically seem to have a particular fondness for chicken dishes. To please your beloved pup, this is one of our favorites a chicken casserole. The required ingredients for this recipe are: “2 chicken breasts, 1 cup of chopped vegetables (carrots, green beans, potatoes, broccoli), 1/4 cup of rolled oats, and 2 cups of chicken broth.”

For a simple three-ingredient recipe, use “46 oz. minced chicken, 15 oz. mixed frozen vegetables, and 26 oz. rice. Combine the ingredients in a saucepan or casserole dish. Stir in 1.5 quarts of water until it becomes a smooth mixture. Place over medium heat and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat and let it simmer until the water is absorbed.”

2. Beef
It’s common knowledge that dogs have a liking for meals containing beef. Even beef gravy or broth can be quite enticing to certain dogs. Canine Journal adds a cheekily named recipe, Beef Stew, Doggie Style, which is “packed with iron from fresh protein and can be stored in the fridge for most of the week (or frozen and reheated later).

” This recipe requires “1 pound of beef stew meat, 1 small sweet potato, 1/2 cup of carrots, and 1/2 cup of green beans chopped and 6 hardboiled eggs: “This recipe is extremely easy your furry friend will adore the mixture.

Your dog can also partake in Taco Tuesday!  “1 pound of ground beef, 1/2 cup of cooked rice (brown or white), 1/3 cup of corn, 1/4 cup of diced tomatoes, and 1/2 cup of chopped romaine lettuce.” Cook and cool the beef and rice, then combine them with the other ingredients. Be cautious when adding any additional fat to this dog food recipe, especially if the beef you’re using already contains a substantial amount.

3. Brown Rice
Dogs are not exclusively carnivores and can greatly benefit from including some grains in their diet. However, it’s crucial to ensure that the ratios are correct, as excessive grain intake can be unhealthy for dogs. The Dog Bakery recommends a meal called the “Old Standard” by ‘Damn Delicious,’ which consists of ingredients commonly used in homemade dog meals: brown rice, turkey, and veggies. It’s a healthy and easy-to-make meal option.

Preparing homemade dog food can also be a frugal choice. You can mix leftover table scraps with brown rice for your dog’s next meal.  Save table scraps and freeze them. When you have about two to three cups, make doggy food. You will need: 2 cups brown rice, 4 cups chicken stock, 1 package mixed frozen peas with carrots, and 3 cups meat fresh or leftovers.

Canine Journal explains why rice is healthy for your pet. Carbohydrates like rice, corn, and beans “keeps intestines healthy and supplies glucose to critical organs, including the brain.”

The Elvis Biscuit: “Combine 2.5 cups of whole wheat flour, 1/2 pound of bananas, and 1 cup of peanut butter. Instructions: Form a dough, cut it into bone-shaped pieces, and bake for 20 minutes at 350°F.”

When you want to reduce the amount of meat your dog consumes, give this recipe a try. Combine 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, 2 chopped zucchinis, 2 chopped sweet potatoes, and 1 cup of chopped broccoli. Cook and cool the vegetables, then mix in the peanut butter until the mixture reaches a mushy consistency.

5. Salmon:
Cats are famously fond of fish, but dogs can benefit from it as well! Salmon is highly nutritious and suitable for various dietary needs. dog child provides a recipe for dog-friendly salmon fried rice: “Simply chop a few vegetables, mix them with rice and salmon, and your pup will have a healthy rice dinner in no time. This homemade salmon dog food is an excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids for your furry friend. This delightful combination of salmon, rice, carrots, and peas makes the perfect meal.”

Salmon is a fantastic source of protein and healthy fats for both humans and dogs. Remember to remove all fish bones. Combine 3 pounds of salmon, 2 handfuls of kale, 1 cup of shredded carrots, and 1/2 cup of pumpkin puree (note: not pumpkin pie filling). Cook and cool the fish and vegetables. Mix in the pumpkin puree, and it’s ready to be served.”

You can prepare doggy omelets with salmon for breakfast. You will need “2 organic eggs, 3 pieces of smoked salmon, and 1 green bell pepper. Lightly grease an oven-proof dish with olive oil. Crack the eggs into the dish, add the green pepper and salmon, and mix together. Bake at 350°F for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the eggs are fully cooked.”

Simply slice bananas, place them in the freezer, and serve them chilled.”

  1. Thank you for all the recipes, I can’t wait to try them. However, I’m now a little confused as all I’ve read till now was not to give dogs our human food because of the ingredients we use on our foods. Doesn’t our food scraps the same as giving them our human food?

I’m constantly arguing with my husband not to feed our dogs our food so this will be surprising to know he is right.😂🤣

    I appreciate your reply.

    Thank you.

    1. Hi Belle,
I have always cooked for my dogs weekly proteins and mixed with veggies and kibble. You will find your dog energy and health greatly improve and you will really see it in their coat. My friends are always impressed with my dogs lack of begging when they are over for dinner. Even just mixing beef or chick broth you can get at dog food store (not human broth too much salt), with a protein and kibble is a great option.

  2. Great recipe ideas. I have a few dog cookie cutters and now I have some recipes! Thanks My Rosie is a registered service animal with you. She’s a 7# AKC Chihuahua.

    1. A sprinkle of basil or parsley on your dog’s treats is ok for dogs. Just steer clear of left overs that have toxic herbs and spices like garlic, salt, cocoa, and nutmeg.

      Here is a list of healthy herbs;
Herbs and Spices that are Good for Dogs
Oregano. Oregano is most commonly associated with pizza and pasta, but this herb is high in antioxidants and flavonoids. …
Rosemary. Rosemary is a great herb to introduce to your pup. …
      Peppermint. …
      Parsley. …
      Basil. …
      Cinnamon. …
      Coriander. …
      Ginger.

  3. Please do not switch to any self-made dog diet without having your vet’s approval. These diets shown above lack nearly all the essential vitamins and minerals that your animal needs for optimal health. Thousands of dogs die each year because their owners fed homemade diets while having no knowledge of the necessary vitamins and minerals, in the correct balance for your pet’s age, weight and health issues. Please do NOT feed your animal low salt broth. The salt content is low for humans but will destroy the kidneys of your animal. Either buy the broth formulated for dogs or make your own broth using no salt. Don’t kill your best friend with loving intentions. If you desire to make your dog food, please check with your vet FIRST.

  4. All these recipes are great for our furry friends diet, however, you must be very specific in the recipes contents. You shouldn’t use store bought broths or stock as these contain toxic ingredients for dog and cats. Most store bought broths contain onions, this is highly toxic.

  5. I have been cooking for my 7 1/2 year old great dane since I saw him sing too quickly. The change in him was instantaneous! Here is my recipe:

    8 cups cooked brown rice
    8 TBSP tumeric
    4 TBSP black pepper

Cook turkey and liver together set aside
Heat and drain veggies set aside
I mix in 2 separate batches of equal parts of all ingredients.
Package however you like (I use food saver)
And you can freeze up to 4 months.

For a dog my size, this recipe lasts for a month.

It is important to supplement with bone meal and calcium when cooking for your dog and do not over cook the food!

I hope this works as well for some of you as it did for us. Happy puppies make for happy owners🐾🐾

  6. I love all the recipes, I cook hamburger meat and chicken and rice for my dogs, but these other recipes are great. I’m tired of wasting money on dog food they won’t eat or eat it one day and then turn their noses up at on other days

  7. I cook my dogs food and have been for almost a year now . He started having stomach problems with the canned soft foods. My dog is a 14 yr old chihuahua mix. He has been a terrific service animal for myself and my husband.
This is how I make his food…..cut up carrots, sweet potatoes, broccoli, cook together till soft in a large saucepan. Cook the meat, your choice of raw dog food from the meat market (butcher shop), or chicken, venison, liver (calf, beef, or chicken). Cook in pan (saucepan or frying pan) and add to vegetables. Add salt free broth and barley(cooked) to mixture and mix together. Put into individual freezer containers and store in freezer. For a small dog this will last almost a month when ,if mixed with kibble.

Since I have been doing this he has been Healthier and his coat 8s shiny and soft.
